Children are among at least 20 people injured after a car was driven at a group of people in Munich, police have said.

The incident on Thursday is believed to have happened during a rally organised by German trade union Verdi.

The city’s fire brigade and police have told local media that at least 20 have been injured, several critically. Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter has told German newspaper Bild that children are among those injured.

Police said on social platform X, formerly Twitter, that the driver was “secured” at the scene and no longer poses any danger.

Journalist Sanda Demmelhuber wrote on X: “There was an incident in Munich at the Verdi rally. A car drove into the demonstration. A person was lying on the street and a young man was taken away by the police. People were sitting on the ground, crying and shaking. Details still unclear.”

It comes ahead of The Munich Security Conference on Friday with US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy set to arrive later on Thursday.

Where did the incident take place

It is believed the car drove into the crowd during a demonstration linked to a strike organised by the Verdi union.

The union said it did not have any information on the incident.

The incident occurred around a mile from the city’s security conference venue.

At least 15 people were injured after Mini Cooper drove into a crowd of demonstrators, German newspaper Bild has reported citing official sources.

Eyewitnesses reported that a child was among the injured, according to BR24.

The medical condition of the injured is unclear.

Someone was seen “lying on the street” and a young man “taken away by police”, Munich-based journalist Sandra Demmelhuber said.

Dozens of ambulances and police were seen at the site surrounding a car with a smashed up windscreen in photos published on social media. The incident reportedly took place at a rally organised by German trade union Verdi.
